Jays Release Reed Johnson

Reed JohnSonThe Toronto Blue Jays released Reed Johnson this morning, giving the starting LF job to Shannon Stewart.

With Moises Alou on the DL until late April following Hernia surgery, the Mets bottom half of the order is all lefties. The right-handed hitting Johnson could be an answer to the Mets’ current lack of righties on the becnch and in the OF. Though Brady Clark, who has had a decent spring, or Fernando Tatis, who arrived in Port St. Lucie just this week due to visa problems, can also fill the bill.

In 2006, Johnson led Toronto with a .319 average and was first among AL leadoff men with a .390 OBP. In April 2006, Johnson suffered a back injury and missed about three months after surgery to repair his herniated disc.

Johnson returned in July 2007 but he wasn’t the same. In 79 games in 2007, Johnson hit .236 with just 2 HRs and 14 RBIs.
