Angel In The Outfield

Sorry about that Chris Berman-esque title. It was either that or “Pagan Ritual”. I went to the game last night, obviously got home late, and I guess I’m feeling over tired & corny.

So unless you are brain dead, you can see where this post is going–Angel Pagan.

Pagan had three hits, including the game winning single, in the Mets 12 inning 4-3 win over the Phillies last night to take the rubber game of the series.

On the bright side, Pagan is currently the Mets best batter. Leading the team in batting average (.370), runs (tied-8), OBP (.457), and RBIs (9). He is also second on the team in walks (tied-6) and has reached base safely in all 8 games.

On the down side, ANGEL PAGAN IS THE METS BEST HITTER.

What is going with the rest of the lineup? Jose Reyes has been doing his best 2nd half of 2007 impression. David Wright had a phenomenal opening series in Florida and ever since, he looks like he did for the first few months of 2007. Carlos Beltran has followed up his fast doubled filled start with a string of games where he has gotten nothing but strikeouts in every big spot. Carlos Delgado is hitting, but he’s largely become a singles hitter.

Pagan is definitely a great story, he is a homegrown Met (via a 2 year detour with the Cubs) and I fondly remember as the hitting and fielding star of the 2001 Brooklyn Cyclones team that were Co-Champs (due to the 9/11 attacks) of the NY-Penn League in their inaugural season. He batted over .300 and had 30 steals that season (only 62 games).

Pagan is the best story of the young season for the Mets. He should remain in the 2 hole once Luis Castillo returns (perhaps as soon as tonight) but will likely be relegated back to the bottom of the order. Hopefully Pagan keeps up his great play and gives Willie Randolph a reason to think platoon once Moises Alou returns from his hernia surgery.

  1. I like Pagan in the two-hole also, at least while he’s staying this hot. But there’s no way Willie leaves him there once Castillo comes back. Castillo is a veteran hitter…blah, blah, blah. Castillo earned the right…blah, blah, blah. Castillo will come around…blah, freakin’ blah, freakin’ blah.
