Mets Alumni Report: Brian Bannister

Former New York Met pitcher Brian Bannister pitched a 3 hit, 3 K, 1 walk, complete game shutout against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Bannister is now 3-0 on the season, following a 12-9 record on a weak 2007 Royals team and Mark Simon on ESPN.com is comparing Bannister to Greg Maddox:

Bannister may be the new Maddux, a thinking man’s pitcher who wins with location and pinpoint control, rather than by overpowering hitters. He won his third straight start Sunday, pitching a complete game against the Twins. Bannister was among the majors’ best rookies last season and is now a major part of what looks to be a Royals’ resurgence. He may not get a lot of strikeouts, but he’s winning games impressively, and that’s what counts.

It should be noted that Omar Minaya traded Bannister for Ambiorix Burgos. If Burgos can miraculously overcome Tommy John surgery and his pre-elbow surgery control problems, he may one day get a lot of strikeouts for the New York Mets and help them impressively win some ball games too.

In the meantime, Burgos will continue to get his name in the press through such means as not paying his landlord the $5600 that he owes and having ridiculous amounts of Jewelry robbed from his Port St. Lucie motel room.
