The Magic Is Back!?!?

It may be a little early to fully believe in the Mets but sure feels good to be a Mets Fan for the first time in about a year.

It may be a little early to declare that “The Magic Is Back” but with 50% of the precincts reporting, Metsie is now declaring that The Big Pelf has arrived. Pelfrey got the win as he pitched 7 innings of 3 hit, 0 walk, shutout ball as the Mets beat the Giants 7-0.

The Mets have won 4 in a row and 5 of their last 6 as they have crept to 1.5 games (1 in the loss column) behind the Phillies.

Free from the shackles of The Jacket’s Zen gobbledeegook, now allowed to mix in his curveball and with a few years of major league experience under his belt…Mike Pelfrey has become the first round draft pick pitcher we all hoped he can be.

Early this season, Pelf was 2-6 and possibly thisclose to being sent down to the minors to find himself. But in his 8 starts since May 26, Pelfrey is 5-0 with a 2.61 ERA.

In conjunction with Pelfrey’s dominance, the Mets bats came alive once again as they put together a 14 hit barrage.

Carlos Beltran went 3-for-4, including a 3 run HR, and had 4 RBI.

Carlos Delgado was 2-for-3 and hit a massive HR off of the AL out of town scoreboard. He now has 15 RBI in his last 134 games.

Delgado has his average up to .243 with 16 HRs and 50 RBI. If he gets his average up another 20 points or so and keeps up the RBI & HR pace, that is a pretty good season…and something I would have signed up for in spring training.

All in all, I think the regime change from Willie Randolph to Jerry Manuel is clearly paying short term dividends. Its easy for Jerry to look good when the offensive is finally producing but there is clearly a different air about the Mets…and more importantly amongst the fan base.
