Cancel The All Star Break!

The Mets are too hot to take the next 3 days off as they beat the Rockies 7-0 Sunday night to complete a three game sweep and picked up their ninth in a row.  They enter the break even in the loss column with the Phillies and just 1/2 game behind overall.

They did it all last night on the back of Mike “Big Pelf” Pelfrey, who seems to have found himself as a Major League pitcher.

Pelf pitched 8 shutout innings of 6 hit, 5 K, no walk ball and had Shea chanting “Lets Go Pelfrey” late in the game.  He was firing on all cylanders and got nearly all his outs from balls put in play on gounders…his slider was that dominant.  Mix that in with his 95 mph fastball and his recently rediscovered curveball and you have a pitcher who is fast becomming a top of the rotation guy.

It has been a dramatic turnaround for Pelfrey, who seemed destined for a stint in the minors just 6 weeks ago.  He has won his last 6 games, has pitched 16 straight scoreless innings, and has only given up 1 run in his last 24 innings.  His ERA was 5.33 at its highest this season and is now down to 3.64.

Oh BTW, the offense is clicking too.

Carlos Beltran got things going with a 3-run HR in the first and had a 3-for-4 night.

Carlos Delgado hit an unbeeviably high 2 run HR golf shot in the 5th.  Much like Pelfrey, 6 weeks ago, who thought we’d be sitting here talking about the good season Delgado is having?  He enters the break with a .248 average, 17 HR, and 52 RBI.

If Delgado keeps up his recent hitting pace, a .265/30 HR/100 RBI season is quite possible and I think we would have all signed up for that during spring training.

Its also nice to see Nick Evans pick up a couple hits.

As excruciating as it is to listen to Jon Miller & Joe Morgan, I have to tip my cap to ESPN for proving why Jose Reyes should be an all star.  They had a stat that Reyes is the first player ever with 20+ doubles, 10+ triples, 10+ homers, 60+ runs and 30+ SB at this point in the season.  Oh and he’s also hitting over .300
