Whew!

The Mets bounced back nicely from Tuesday’s debacle, beating the Phillies 6-3 last night.

The difference in the game was Jose Reyes’ 3-run HR off of Ryan Madsen in the 6th, which broke a 3-3 tie at the time.  Jose flew around the bases during his HR trot, making sure to add a little something special as he passed by Jimmy Rollins.  Nice.

Mets starter John Maine was decent and shaky at times, but good enough to get a W.  He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits over 7 innings while picking up 5 Ks and giving up 3 walks.

Scott Schoeneweis and Joe Smith combined for a scoreless 8th and Billy Wagner made a triumphant return following his sholder stiffness for a 1-2-3 9th.  Wags has not given up a hit or run in his last 6 innings.

Condolences go out to Pedro Martinez, who left the stadium in the middle of the game. Pedro’s 79 year old father Pablo passed away in the Dominican Republic following his battle with brain cancer.

Pedro has been scratched from his start tomorrow and Mike Pelfrey will move up from his scheduled start on Saturday and take his turn on normal rest.

As for who throws on Saturday, Adam Rubin reports in today’s Daily News:

Claudio Vargas is out since he pitched Wednesday night for Triple-A New Orleans, leaving either ex-Yankee Brandon Knight or Brian Stokes, who respectively are slated to pitch today and Saturday for the Zephyrs, or Nelson Figueroa, who threw 95 pitches Tuesday, as call-up possibilities. Jon Niese’s start for Double-A Binghamton was rained out Wednesday night, perhaps making him a wild-card candidate.
