Closer? We Don’t Need No Stinking Closer.

The Mets beat the Braves 5-4 to sweep the 3 game series on the strength of a Carlos Delgado walk off hit & RBI, Delgado had a (kinda, sorta) 5-for-5 night.

The game winner came as Delgado hit a line drive that trailed away from RF Omar Infante just enough towards the gap in right center that the ball simultaneously bounced off Infante’s glove as he slipped to the ground.  For the second time on the night, it appeared that Delgado reached base on an error but was credited with a hit.

David Wright was the runner on second and would have likely been picked off had Infante made the catch.  Wright was caught up between second & third and then stumbled just as the ball bounced off the glove.  Wright then made his way towards home and did a belly flop slide to cross the plate.

Pedro Martinez had a decent start giving up 4 runs over 7 innings.  He wasn’t the Pedro of old and probably never will be again but, it was a good enough start to put the Mets in a position to win the game…and thats all you can ask of the (de-facto) 5th starter.

In a bit of sweet revenge, Wright hit a solo HR in the 5th inning off of Braves starter Mike Hampton.  Wright was selected by the Mets with the draft pick they received when Hampton left the Mets to sign with Rockies.

All in all, the Mets are giving you that “You Gotta Believe” feeling as of late.  If the bullpen can do their part (Pedro Feliciano and Luis Ayala scattered 2 hits, no walks, and no runs over 2 innings), anything is possible.

It was the Mets ninth win in the last 10 games and they are now remarkably 13-4 since Billy Wagner went on the DL.  To top it all off, the Phillies lost which extends the Mets first place lead to 2 1/2 games.
