Mets & Red Sox To “Open” Citi Field

Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal is reporting that the first games to be played at Citi Field will be exhibition games between the Mets & Red Sox on April 3-4.

It has become common practice for new stadiums to “open” with exhibition games as test runs for teams to get all the operational kinks out of the way before the real opening day.  But a new stadium in NYC with Red Sox Nation in attendance will no doubt mean a 42,5000-45,000 person sell out and thus will be a difficult test for the staff at the new park.

If the recent pattern in regular season scheduling holds up, the Red Sox will return to Citi Field later in 2009 for Interleague play.

The NL East should be facing the AL East in 2009 and the trend has been to alternate home sites for matchups.  The Mets and Red Sox series in 2006 took place at Fenway Park.

The real Opening Day at Citi Field will come on April 14 against the Padres, following a Mets road trip to start the 2009 season.

Metsie was hoping for a home & home exhibition Subway Series against the Yankees for charity to christen the new ballparks in Flushing & Queens.  Oh well.
