Something’s Brewing In Flushing

Even with Oliver Perez on the mound, this one was over practically before it started.

The Mets scored 5 runs after only their first 6 batters batted and a total of 6 runs in the first inning en route to a 9-2 victory over the Brewers to complete a 3 game sweep.

The big blow in the inning came on a Ryan Church grand slam, his first HR since his return from his concussions. A suddenly invigorated Brian Schnieder added a solo HR to give the Mets a 6-0 cushion before they even took the field.

The only negative for the Mets on the day was Perez’s wildness on a day where it would have been nice to give the bullpen a rest.  For the 3rd time in 4 starts, Perez walked 5.  He also gave up 5 hits over 6 2/3 innings and was pulled after throwing 117 pitches.

Joe Smith, Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings.  The Mets’ bullpen has now put up 16 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Strangely, even in this laugher, Jerry Manuel hasn’t yet used any of the bullpen’s minor league callups.  Manuel blamed it on what has transpired over the last month or so.

“You know, man, I’ve had some tough losses,” he said.

Pedro Feliciano , Luis Ayala, Aaron Heilman, and Smith are all in the top 7 in the majors in relief appearances.

Next up, the big series at Shea against the Phillies that starts on Friday.  It also happens to be the last 3 games of the regular season between the Mets and Phils.

The Phillies lost on Wednesday, extending the Mets first place lead to 3 games.  Its time to pad that lead.
