What A Difference A Year Makes

So we would all rather have seen the Mets take 2 of 3 from the Phillies this weekend, rather than it being the other way around.

But at the end of the day, the Mets ended up losing 2 of 3 to Philly this weekend and still lead by 2 games.

All things considered, the Mets are in a much better place than a year ago (and they were up by 6 games a year ago today)…

By way of a 6-3 win in the Sunday night cap of the day’s split DH, the Mets completed their 2008 season series against the Phils with a 11-7 record, a sharp contrast to last year’s 6-12 record.

The 2008 Mets have a manager in Jerry Manuel with a pulse in dugout and who also has a finger on the pulse of his team.  Something last year’s edition sorely lacked.

Perhaps most important of all, the 2008 Mets have Johan Santana and a rejuvinated Carlos Delgado slugging his way into MVP contention.

Santana gave up 5 hits and 2 runs over 7 1/3 and Delgado hit 2 HRs, including a huge moonshot that was as high as the Mezzanine at Shea when it sailed clear over the Mets bullpen.  That HR was estimated to have traveled 460 feet.

It was Delgado’s 3rd multi-HR game since August 25.

  1. I want a recount on that 2nd home run. 460 seems short. That thing was SMOKED.
