Ollie Is Omar’s Folly

It’s a long season but, seriously, WTF Ollie?

Part of me says Perez “is who he is” and he can and will go out and throw a 3 hitter next week.  But the fact of the matter is he is a #3 starter on a team that has World Series aspirations.

This sort of effort (5 hits, 5 walks, 8 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings) is what we’ve come to expect from Perez so it feels a little silly to get mad at him him.

No, the real culprit here is GM Omar Minaya.  Minaya is the one who brought Perez back at 3 years and $36 million.  Derek Lowe might be old, but he threw a scoreless 8 innings the other day for the Braves against the Phillies.

If Perez doesn’t gain some consistency and gain it quickly, it could be a long season for the Mets.  With the poor economy, it will be a struggle to sell all those tickets in June and beyond that the Mets have not yet put on sale for Citi Field.

While Minaya did an excellent job of remaking the bullpen this past off season, it will do the Mets no good to have Putz & K-Rod sitting idle out in the pen because Perez put the game out of reach.  Perez’s contract could be Omar’s undoing.

  1. You are not going to believe this…but…I’m in almost total agreement with you (Horror! Shock! Gasp!…ok I’m done). Given what we knew of Ollie and knowing that Derek Lowe backs his shit up, there is no reason besides money/years that the Mets did not give a legit pursuit of Lowe and went with $0.10 head Oh Pea. NOW! The only reason I’m not in 100% agreement with you is that the whole deal smells of Wilpon Coupons. And luckily they have a scapegoat to pin it on with Omar. His reward? Getting a contract extension late last season when it was evident the team would not make it past Sept 30.
