Johan & ????

A week and a half into the season it is hard for even the least jaded Mets fans to not be worried about this starting rotation.  Once you get past Johan Santana, its a whole lottta question marks.

Mike Pelfrey has tendinitis in his right forearm and it appears that he will miss his start on Sunday.  Indications are Nelson Figueroa will be called up from AAA Buffalo to take the start.

Oliver Perez is the enigma he probably always will be, you never know what you will get from one of his starts.

Then there’s John Maine.  Following a strong opening 2 innings, Maine stunk it up last night starting in the third inning.   He threw 43 pitches, faced 10 batters and gave up 5 runs in an inning that shouldn’t have been that bad.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead, Maine loaded the bases and had a 1-2 count on Chase Headley.  Headley eventually got to a full count and then hit a 2 run single.  There was no looking back for the Padres after that as they went on to a 6-5 victory.

Maine gave up a total of 6 runs, 7 hits, and 3 walks in 5 innings last night and simply did not look good.  His velocity was up, hitting 94 mph at one point.  But as is often the case with Maine, making a mistake to one or two batters causes him to completely lose his focus and confidence.

Livan Hernandez goes tonight for the Mets.  The hope for him or any of the other Mets fifth starter candidates during Spring Training was that hopefully he would give you a decent enough start to keep the Mets in a ballgame and not tax the bullpen.

Well here we are 9 games into the season and tonight is now almost a must win/stopper type start for Hernandez.  The Mets are off to a 4-5 start and even though its early, the Mets are trying to move past the last 2 seasons worth of collapses.

Johan Santana only pitches every 5th day, he can’t be cloned.
